How to collect…an MSU Sample (for Males)
Background:
When you pass urine, there are 3 parts to your urine flow/stream: the first part, the middle part and the last part.
To get the best possible results for this test, it is important that you collect the middle part of your urine flow/stream, NOT the first or last parts.
Procedure:
(1) Are you circumcised?
If the answer is YES, go to (2).
If the answer is NO, go to (3).
(2) Circumcised MSU collection:
Unscrew the lid of the supplied jar and have the jar ready.
Begin passing urine into the toilet – but midway through passing the sample, you must catch this part of your urine into the jar until it is about 1 quarter to 1 third full. Immediately remove the jar from the stream and pass the rest of the urine into the toilet (the last part).
(3) Uncircumcised MSU collection:
Unscrew the lid of the supplied jar and have the jar ready.
Retract your foreskin as completely as possible.
With your foreskin retracted, begin passing urine into the toilet – but midway through passing the sample, you must catch this part of your urine into the jar until it is about 1 quarter to 1 third full. Immediately remove the jar from the stream and pass the rest of the urine into the toilet (the last part).
What to do next?
After collecting the sample, replace the lid and write your full name and date of birth on the outside of the jar, as well as your doctors name.
For the best possible results, the sample should be kept cold (refrigerator temperature; NOT frozen) and be brought into a Perth Medical Laboratories Collection Centre (see the reverse of your request form for location details) as soon as possible after collection (within 1-1.5 hours). If a longer delay is unavoidable, store the sample in the refrigerator (NOT freezer) prior to delivering it to the laboratory.
