Fee Structure

Histopathology And Cytopathology
The fee for the service varies depending on the type specimen. If you are a patient in a private hospital with private health insurance, you will most likely not receive an account, this is because our practice has agreements with most major health funds, which allows for a simplified billing process. If you are a private outpatient or are self-insured in a private hospital the practice will send an account directly to you and there will be a gap payable.

Clinical Pathology
There are numerous tests in each of the clinical pathology disciplines. Each of these has a Medicare item number, which corresponds to the Medicare schedule fee, which is set by Medicare Australia. For outpatient referrals, PML accepts the Medicare rebate on pathology tests, which means that you will not receive a bill if your Medicare details have been provided to us.

We will bill all DVA patients directly to the department of veteran affairs.

What do I do with my Bill?

Outpatients
If you receive a bill it is because Medicare details have not been provided to us, or your service was not covered by the Medicare Schedule (eg. Thin Preps). Pay your bill to PML using the options detailed on our Invoice, and then submit your receipt with a copy of your invoice to Medicare and you will receive a reimbursement.

Inpatients
If you were in Hospital at the time of your test, you may receive a bill from us if your Private insurance details were not provided; or if you don’t have private insurance. Pay your bill to PML using the options detailed on our Invoice, and then submit your receipt with a copy of your invoice to Medicare and your private insurer (if applicable) and you will receive a reimbursement. In some circumstances there may be a gap payment requirement.
