Glucose Tolerance Test

Preparation for a Glucose Tolerance Test (75g GTT)

Patient Instructions: Fasting Glucose Tolerance

Background:
The purpose of this test is to see how your body responds to a specified quantity of glucose.

Procedure:
(1) You should be well at the time of the test.
(2) You should be on your normal diet for at least 3 days prior to the test.
(3) You must fast for 12 hours immediately prior to the test. (It is ok to drink plain water, however)
(4) Do not do any vigorous exercise/activity prior to the test.
(5) Patients should not smoke during the test
(6) The test takes 2 hours in total, during which time you must remain seated in the waiting room in between blood collections (3 blood samples will need to be drawn at set intervals during the 2 hour period). Bring a book or magazine to help occupy the waiting time.
