Hydrogen Breath Test for Lactose / Fructose Intolerance
How does it work?
The Hydrogen Breath Test (HBT) aids in the diagnosis of Lactose or Fructose intolerance. The HBT measures the amount of certain gases produced in your breath following the consumption of a lactose or fructose containing drink. Note: Only 1 sugar (lactose or fructose) may be tested at one time.
Can anyone have the test?
If you have diabetes, or have had stomach surgery in the past, the HBT may give false readings. It is recommended you consult with your doctor before proceeding. Recent antibiotic treatment (last 2 weeks) and/or recent diarrhea (last week) may affect the test. Please inform the laboratory and your test can be rescheduled.
You will need to drink a 400ml lactose or fructose drink. If you weigh as the amount of lactose drink consumed will need to be adjusted.
If you require testing to both sugars, then you will need to make 2 separate appointments as only 1 sugar may be tested per time.
What you need to do before the test:
1. Do not eat any of the following: beans, bran, nuts and high fibre cereals for 24 hours prior to the test.
2. If you are on any fibre supplements or laxatives these must be discontinued for the 24 hours prior to the test.
3. You must fast for 12 hours prior to the test.
4. Do not smoke, sleep, or exercise for at least half an hour before, or during the test.
5. Please advise the Pathology Nurse of any prescribed medications at the time of booking the test.
What you need to bring:
1. You must bring your toothbrush and toothpaste – you will need to brush your teeth immediately prior to starting the test, and then after drinking the lactose drink.
2. A book or magazine!
How long will it take?
The test will take just over 2 hours to complete. During that time you will need to remain at the laboratory. Your doctor will receive your results back within 24 hrs.
If you need both tests (ie. Lactose and Fructose) then you will need to make a second appointment for the remaining Sugar to be tested.
What is the cost?
The cost of the test is $93.60 per sugar tested. A Medicare rebate of $30.00 may be available.
