Histopathology is the microscopic study of diseased tissue. Accurate diagnosis of cancer and other diseases requires Histopathological examination of tissue samples.
Formerly known as Heenan Lam Skin Pathology, Perth Pathology is a specialty dermatopathology laboratory which is available to dermatologists, plastic surgeons and general practitioners.
In 2014 Perth Pathology established an independently branded boutique, Heenan Lam Skin Pathology, run by Dr Heenan and Dr Lam. The branding has been shortened to HL Skin Pathology after Dr Lam left in 2015 as there is considerable global recognition of Dr Heenan as a leading pathologist in his field. Direct immunofluorescence can be performed on skin or mucosal biopsies and is useful for confirmation of immunobullousdermatoses (eg bullous pemphigoid), connective tissue disease (eg lupus erythematosus) and vasculitis (e.g. Henoch-Schonlein purpura). The tissue needs to be placed in immunofluorescence transport medium. Direct immunofluorescence cannot be performed on formalin fixed tissue. Please contact us if require the transport medium.
The program will allow clinicians, who refer skin pathology to Perth Pathology to submit their provisional diagnosis on cases submitted for histological evaluation. Reports will be issued every six months to participants highlighting the individual clinician’s accuracy in the identification of lesions and margin adequacy when removing lesions.
To qualify for CPD points, participants will need to take part in a minimum of two cycles; the first to identify areas of improvement in identification of and the resection of lesions and the second to monitor improvement in skills after the implementation of changes to methodology. There will be five intervals available over the 2020-22 triennium. The program is open to all RACGP and ACRRM members.
